To our Valued Customers and Friends:
We regret to inform you that unreasonable demands placed upon our business have led us to a bittersweet crossroad. The tough decision to continue on under the pressures of such arbitrary conditions were ultimately outweighed by our family’s desire to choose and do what is pono.
Sadly, we will no longer be able to serve you and your loved ones here at this sweet little corner shop. So many of you are in our thoughts on a daily basis and we are extremely grateful for the support, aloha, and fond memories you’ve shared with us.
As time permits, we will occasionally share “Shop Stories” here on our website and on our social media platforms.
In the Spring of 2016, owning an ice cream shop was nowhere on our family’s radar. If you had asked us anything about it we would have given you a most puzzled look before going on our merry way. However, God works in mysterious ways.
One day Mom received a call from Dave’s Ice Cream, Inc. saying that they might be looking for a new owner/operator for the long-standing shop located in Aiea. The voice on the other end of the line simply asked if she could “get the word out”. How hard could it be? She’d make a few calls, ask Dad to keep an eye out for anyone who would be a good candidate, and that would be the end of that, right? Sure it would...until Dad had a moment of inspiration, gave it some thought, came home, and announced to her, “I think we’re supposed to buy it!”
Huh!?!! What??? Are you kidding!?!! Needless to say, doubt set in and along with it came fear, and all the ‘what if’ questions one could think of. While Dad stood firm in his decision, Mom experienced many sleepless nights. “An ice cream shop? What!? Do people even go to ice cream shops anymore? Will anyone even walk through our doors?” Doubt and more doubt. Dad would be sound asleep at night while dollar signs and a multitude of unsettling scenarios raced through Mom’s mind. Although she knew she should probably take her concerns to prayer, she willfully refused until she could no longer handle the lack of sleep. Oh, the joys of rebellion...Ha! Finally, she surrendered. She said a heartfelt prayer, waited patiently on the Lord, and experienced peace when He directed her to pray for the shop itself...to pray for every single individual that would walk through its doors; for families who needed a happy hangout spot, for students who needed encouragement, for a neighborhood that needed love, and for a community that needed compassion. The very next day, she made the call to inquire if the shop was still available.
After several meetings spanning over a few weeks, it was settled. Our family acquired the keys to the shop and re-construction began. It was almost as if we were called to this place; led here to rebuild, restore, and revive. As work began we were blessed to have been connected to so many talented and kindhearted craftsmen. Our newly formed friendships allowed us to work together to breathe new life into our cozy little corner of the Waimalu community. Interestingly, our shop sits almost equal distances apart from Dad and Mom’s childhood homes. How cool is that?!
At the start of the Summer, phase one of renovations were almost complete and our family prepared to open our doors on 16 July 2016. We were overcome and showered with countless blessings, kind words, and a generous outpouring of love and support from family, friends, and members of the community. In the coming months we made a mess of things as we sprinkled creativity everywhere while testing out new dessert ideas, and managed to avoid sticky situations as we learned to find a balance between business life and family life.
Today, as we prepare to enter into phase two of restoration plans, our little corner ice cream shop proudly serves Hawaii’s families and visitors to our islands. The next time you're in the mood for some really delicious ice cream, be sure to stop by. We look forward to serving you at our Aiea location!
